A rolled ankle on an uneven sidewalk or a sore ankle after a long run can slow your whole day. Ankles carry your full weight with every step, so pain there is hard to ignore.

This guide covers sprains, running and walking aches, and extra support, and explains what ankle pain physiotherapy in Port Credit can involve at MyHealth Care Centre.

Ankle Sprains

Most ankle sprains happen when the foot rolls inward and stretches the ligaments on the outside of the ankle. Swelling, bruising and pain when you walk are common.

A bad roll can also break a bone, so if you can't put weight on the ankle, get it checked at emergency or by your doctor first.

Swelling and stiffness after a sprain can make the ankle feel unsteady for a while. Some people find the same ankle rolls again later, so it's worth getting it checked if that keeps happening.

Our article on help for sprains, strains and sudden pain explains where to go and when.

Ankle Pain From Running and Walking

The waterfront trail and the paths through Port Credit's parks are popular for running and walking. Adding distance quickly, or running on tired legs, can leave an ankle sore.

Stiff ankles can also change how your knees and hips move. If you're curious how yours compare, try the self-check in our article on whether your hips, ankles and back are ready to move.

Ankle Support: Bracing and Orthotics

Some people find extra support helpful while an ankle settles or when they return to sport. Dr. Mike offers bracing and makes custom orthotics at the clinic.

Your practitioner can talk with you about whether a brace or orthotics may fit your plan. Some insurance plans want a doctor's note for orthotics, so check yours first.

Footwear matters too. Your practitioner may ask about the shoes you wear for work, walking and sport.

How We Can Help

Your First Visit

Your practitioner will ask how the pain started and check your ankle, foot, knee and hip. You can choose an initial exam only, or an initial exam with treatment so you can start care right away.

Care Options

Your plan may include physiotherapy in Port Credit with Shirley Chan, chiropractic care with Dr. Mike Skiby, a registered chiropractor in Ontario and a member of the College of Chiropractors of Ontario, acupuncture or electro-acupuncture, and laser therapy with our 30 watt Class 4 laser. These may help ease pain and support a safe return to walking and sport. We don't do X-rays or MRIs at the clinic. If imaging is needed, we refer to Well Health or LifeLabs, and Dr. Mike can give patients an X-ray requisition.

Getting Ready for Your First Visit

After you book, you'll get an email to set up your online account and a link to your intake form. Please fill it in before your visit. On the day, it helps to:

  • Wear comfortable clothes you can move in
  • Bring your insurance card and any imaging reports you have
  • Bring a doctor's note if your insurance plan asks for one

New patients can also start with a virtual consultation. Follow-up care is in person at our Port Credit clinic.

When to See a Doctor or Go to Emergency

Go to emergency or call 911 if you can't put any weight on your ankle, if it looks out of shape, if your foot is cold or numb, or after a bad fall or accident.

If swelling or pain isn't settling and you're unsure why, your family doctor is a good first stop.
