5 common shoulder conditions

  1. Overuse from repeated reaching or lifting. A dull ache that builds with overhead work, sport or lifting, and eases with rest.
  2. Muscle strain or sprain after a fall or sudden movement. Sharp pain that started at a clear moment, like a fall, a lift or a quick reach.
  3. Shoulder stiffness. The shoulder gets harder to move over weeks, and reaching up or behind your back feels limited.
  4. Tendon irritation (tendinitis). Pain around the front or side of the shoulder when you lift your arm, sometimes at night.
  5. Bursitis. A tender, sore spot on the outer shoulder that hurts when you lie on it or raise your arm.
