What should I know about pregnancy and labour?

There are few things in life that put more stress on your body than pregnancy. Your body must adapt to posture and weight changes with each passing month and commonly the uncomfortable result is lower back pain.

Many women have come to accept that back pain accompanies pregnancy and menstrual cycles. But it shouldn't have to. Your body was made to compensate and adapt naturally to pregnancy and if you are experiencing aches and pains, something else is wrong and needs to be addressed. Not just for you, but for your developing and growing child as well.

Pregnancy - a woman's body experiences a period of rapid changes (shape, hormonal and loose ligaments). As a result, the body becomes stressed. Many women develop upper back pain, lower back pain and sciatica. Chiropractors have special tables which expand to allow pregnant women to lie on their stomach. The special tables in conjunction with specific methods geared to the pregnant woman, will allow safe and proper chiropractic treatment up to labour. In a study by JM Daly, 91% of pregnant women studied reported pain relief as a result of regular chiropractic care while pregnant. Through regular chiropractic care, women can benefit from proper nervous and body system function so important to fetus development. Specific chiropractic adjustments are now shown to be preventative measure and treatment for toxemia.

Labour - A 1977 Harvard Medical School study discovered association between use of epidurals to relieve pain and maternal fever during labour and/or sepsis (an infection) in newborns, requiring antibiotics. Is having your newborn subjected to antibiotics when their immune system is still fragile a good idea? Finding a way to decrease discomfort experienced at childbirth thereby decreasing utilization of epidurals can be not only healthier for the mother, but healthier for her child.

Multiparous women (pregnant 3 or more times) -Were shown to have a 39% shorter labour time to those receiving chiropractic care in a study by J Fallon in 1991. Other studies show that standing or squatting during delivery provides the fewest problems for both mother and baby (including few forceps delivery). Many women under regular chiropractic care, visit their doctor on their way to the birthing center or hospital for a chiropractic treatment.

What are some tips for anti-aging?

With science finding ways to increase human longevity, ever-greater numbers of older people will be trying to cope with age-related complaints and enjoy not just a longer life, but a healthier one.

As we age, our bodies naturally change and become more prone to certain health problems. From middle age on, most of us may experience unpleasant alterations in our skin, eyesight and hearing, teeth and digestion, which we associate with old age. Loss of hair, memory and sex drive are expected, and feared, signs of aging.

Worse, older people are far more likely than younger individuals to develop such serious disorders as arthritis, osteoporosis, hardening of the arteries (atherosclerosis), high blood pressure, hernias, thyroid and kidney problems, diabetes, Parkinson's disease and various forms of cancer.

Everyone should be concerned about how the aging process affects them and their loved ones, including their older friends and relatives and even their children – whose longevity and wellness when they are older may depend to a great degree on how their health is protected while they are young.

Our clinic philosophy and practice are ideally suited to helping older people live longer and healthier lives. Because chiropractors are committed to health maintenance, preventing disease, and promoting lifelong wellness, they can give members of the aging population the health care they need for continued longevity and an enhanced quality of life.

You probably know of men and women in their seventies or older who look, feel and act years, even decades, younger than they are. That's how we all want to be: as active and vital as we've been in our thirties and forties. What is breech fetal position?

Many women may discover their fetus is in an improper or breech position.  Breech (feet first) or transverse lie (fetus is in an angle in the uterus). After the seventh month of gestation, if a fetus is in this type of abnormal position, it can be subject to biomechanical stress leading to vertebral subluxations. Any abnormal biomechanical stresses to the vertebra may cause abnormal development of cartilage structures (which eventually become boney).

A doctor trained in evaluating and treating pregnant women for breech fetal positioning can treat the patient with good results (97% successful).  This is a safe method, not only for mother but for the fetus and normal positioning of the fetus usually occurs within 4 to 5 visits. When the fetus is in a normal position, it’s chances of developing properly in the uterus, greatly increase.

What is menopause?

Menopause usually affects women between the ages of 48 to 55. The main problems a woman is likely to experience with varying degrees of severity during menopause are: headaches, tiredness, lethargy, irritability, anxiety, nervousness, depression, insomnia, inability to concentrate, hot flashes, vaginal dryness and sweating.

Menopause is part of the natural aging process. At the time of menopause a woman’s body no longer produces sufficient blood to sustain a monthly period without overly draining her system. What is post partum?

Post partum there are many physical and emotional demands are placed on the mother throughout her labour. A woman's body generally makes it's recovery in the 6 weeks after the birth but symptoms may persist or develop after the initial recovery period. We can help replenish and restore the balance in a woman's body and is effective in treating the following post partum conditions:

  • Post Partum Depression.
  • Insufficient Breast Milk or Not Flowing.
  • Incontinence.
  • Haemorrhoids.
  • Abdominal or Back Pain.

Due to the abnormal stress that the mother’s body goes through during childbirth, frequently the upper back musculature becomes tight, interfering with proper nerve flow to the breasts. Our post partum treatment to the midback area following delivery, can allow the breast milk to flow properly, decreasing frustration for the mother and increasing the breast flow to the baby. By breastfeeding, the child has an opportunity to receive natural immunities from their mother allowing them to experience improved health. Regular care in new mothers can relieve back discomfort associated with reduced sleep and lifting the new baby.

How can pre-birth acupuncture help me?

Acupuncture can provide physical and emotional support to a woman during labour, birth and the immediate postpartum period. Pre-birth acupuncture refers to a series of treatments in the final weeks of pregnancy to prepare women for childbirth.

Research has shown pre-birth acupuncture treatments can reduce the duration of labour by over 2 hours and midwives have also reported their patients have a reduced rate of medical intervention during the birth. As a result there is greater satisfaction with the mother's birth experience.

Acupuncture treatments before birth are aimed at helping prepare the woman’s cervix and pelvis for the birth. Treatment can also help address medical conditions associated with pregnancy such as hypertension, heartburn, insomnia and haemorrhoids.

If you would like pre-birth acupuncture and want a natural approach to health, we can help. Our Mississauga clinics have an approach to better health.

What is Irregular menstruation?

Most women will have missed or irregular period at one point or another — some with anticipation of a pregnancy, others because of anxiety or tension. At the clinic, we see women who menstruate like clockwork, while others report never having had a regular period.

When we are under stress, regardless of the source (danger, personal relationships, work, environment) our adrenal glands are designed to secrete the hormone cortisol. Cortisol has a direct impact on the sex hormones estrogen, progesterone, and DHEA. Eating disorders, dieting, drug use, and reliance on stimulants like caffeine and alcohol are also interpreted by the body as kinds of stress. Poor nutrition seems to physically change the proteins in the brain so they can no longer send the proper signals for normal ovulation.

Acupuncture can help balance the menstrual cycle, regulate the menstrual flow and ease pain.  It may also help with symptoms associated with PMS (pre-menstrual syndrome), for example, irritability, headaches, bloating, breast tenderness, emotional sensitivity and depression.
