Massage Therapy Clinic - Mississauga

What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is a hands on manipulation of the tissues of the body, these tissues are generally the muscles and connective tissue in order to enhance your health. Massage Therapy is based on modern concepts of anatomy, including a wide variety of modalities that go beyond the original framework of Swedish massage. At our Mississauga Massage Therapy Clinic, we help alleviate muscle discomfort associated with everyday and occupational stresses, muscular overuse, and many chronic pain syndromes. It can also greatly reduce the development of painful muscular patterning if begun early enough after accidents involving trauma and injury.

Massage has been shown to increase the body's production of pain-killing endorphins and the mood-altering hormone serotonin. It can also slow the release of the stress hormone cortisol. Tense muscles that may also compress blood vessels and stretch nerves, restricting blood flow and causing pain. As the affected area is massaged, the muscles gradually release their stranglehold on the irritated nerves, and the pain eases. The same mechanisms also make massage helpful in the recovery process for an injured muscle.

Soft-Tissue Release

Soft-Tissue Release (STR) is a powerful injury treatment technique developed in Europe with the world’s fastest sprinters. Recovery rates once considered impossible by traditional therapists and sports medicine doctors were achieved, through methods based on European osteopathy techniques, along with insights from quantum physics. In recent years, STR has been given clinical application for chronic low back pain and whiplash injuries.

STR deals directly with the reasons for soft tissue dysfunctions and subsequent referred pain and nerve entrapment. In acute conditions, STR affects the insidious way scar tissue is formed, and in chronic conditions, STR breaks up the fibrotic and adhered mass of scar tissue to quickly allow the muscle to return to its natural resting length. Once the muscle or muscle group has returned to the original resting length, there is an immediate release from the pain induced by the inflammation response.

The client is placed in a particular position so that the muscle begins to stretch in a very specific direction or plane. When the exact location of the injury has been defined, a determined pressure is applied directly into the affected tissue or along a specific line of injury.

At the same time, the client is given a set of instructions that now engage the antagonist of the muscles involved. The muscle is extended from a fixed position in a determined direction under a pinpoint of pressure. Decrease in pain and increase in range of motion are often immediate, offsetting any minor discomfort experienced.

We invite you to discover soft tissue release technique for your health.

Arthritis affects four (4) million Canadians is some form or another. Arthritis means inflammation of a joint. The signs of inflammation are: pain, redness, swelling and heat. Bowen Therapy

Bowen Therapy is a very gentle, yet dynamic remedial therapy that empowers the body to heal itself. Exact moves over muscles, tendons and ligaments are applied to disturb the fascia. There are frequent pauses between each series of moves to allow the body time to benefit from the treatment. This promotes healing through physical, emotional, mental and energetic levels as well as relief from pain and discomfort from a multitude of acute conditions. Bowen does not interfere with the effectiveness of other disciplines. Related to Fascial Kinetics.

Massage Therapy can Treat Many Conditions

What Conditions do Massage Therapists Treat?

Massage therapy is typically paired with other therapies such as chiropractic therapy and physical therapy due to its revitalizing properties. Therefore massage therapy can treat many of the conditions physical therapy, chiropractic therapy and many other therapies address. These conditions include, but are not limited to:

  • Anxiety and Depression
  • Asthma
  • Pain in the Body (Back, Neck, Arm)
  • Cancer Symptoms
  • Muscle Tears
  • Dislocations
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Pregnancy/Labour Support
  • Stroke
  • Sports Injuries

Reflexology

Reflexology is an entire system of massage devoted to the feet. The feet map out the entire body through a reflex mechanism so that by stimulating a certain area of the foot a corresponding organ or body part is simultaneously stimulated. The hands and ears are other areas of the body which have similar reflex maps inherent in their structure, but the feet correspond to the chronic state of the organs, etc., rather than to acute or sub-acute levels.

Periodic deep massage of the feet in a systematic manner can provide beneficial results in clearing up deep-seated metabolic irregularities and malfunctions. It is a thorough and deep massage which is primarily therapeutic in intent, although, because of the reflex action involved, one’s entire body feels as if it had just received a full massage after a Reflexology treatment.

Hot Stone Massage

Stone massage therapy is the use of smooth hot or cold stones, usually basalt or marble, during massages. When heated stones are used, muscles relax allowing the massage therapist to work deeper into the muscle without the discomfort of regular deep tissue massage. Many times stone massage therapy will use cold stones placed on sinuses to help a client with sinus congestion.

Stones of all shapes and sizes and varying temperatures, ranging from zero to 140 degrees, are used during a Stone massage therapy to elicit physical healing, mental relaxation, and a spiritual connection to earth energy.

Warm stones encourage the exchange of blood and lymph and provide soothing heat for deep-tissue work. Cold stones aid with inflammation, moving blood out of the area, and balancing male/female energies.

Stones are placed in varying positions on the body for energy balancing or may be used by the therapist for specific trigger-point work. The alternating heat and cold of thermotherapy brings the entire body into the healing process, with a rapid exchange of blood and oxygen and alternating rise and fall of respiration rate as the body seeks homeostasis.

Stone therapy requires less effort from the practitioner’s own body and delivers healing warmth to the hands, benefitting the therapist, as well as the client.
