Massage Therapy

Massage Therapy Clinic - Mississauga

What is Massage Therapy?

Massage therapy is a hands on manipulation of the tissues of the body, these tissues are generally the muscles and connective tissue in order to enhance your health. Massage Therapy is based on modern concepts of anatomy, including a wide variety of modalities that go beyond the original framework of Swedish massage. At our Mississauga Massage Therapy Clinic, we help alleviate muscle discomfort associated with everyday and occupational stresses, muscular overuse, and many chronic pain syndromes. It can also greatly reduce the development of painful muscular patterning if begun early enough after accidents involving trauma and injury.

Massage has been shown to increase the body's production of pain-killing endorphins and the mood-altering hormone serotonin. It can also slow the release of the stress hormone cortisol. Tense muscles that may also compress blood vessels and stretch nerves, restricting blood flow and causing pain. As the affected area is massaged, the muscles gradually release their stranglehold on the irritated nerves, and the pain eases. The same mechanisms also make massage helpful in the recovery process for an injured muscle.

What conditions do you treat with massage?

We treat all forms of soft tissue aches, pains, stiffness and injury, regardless of whether they are caused by stress, illness, accident, strain or sports. Back, hip, neck (whiplash) and leg pain or discomfort are common areas we treat, as well as headache, TMJ and postural or ergonomic problems due to extended computer use or other repetitive tasks. Hours of sitting at your computer without regular breaks can result in headaches, low back pain, jaw pain, neck and shoulder pain or tightness, as well as tingling or numbness in your arms and hands.

Many jobs and professions require repetitive movements, prolonged standing, or awkward body positions, e.g., professional musicians, house painters, hairdressers and dentists, to name just a very few. Almost everyone can benefit from massage therapy to relieve strain, stress and postural imbalances. Taking care of a problem before you get to the point of needing surgery is a positive move toward health.

How Will Massage Therapy Feel?

It usually depends on the techniques used. Many massage therapists use a form of Swedish massage, which is often a baseline for practitioners. In a general Swedish massage, your session may start with broad, flowing strokes (effleurage) that will help calm your nervous system and relax exterior muscle tension.

As your body becomes relaxed, pressure will gradually be increased to relax specific areas and relieve areas of muscular tension. Often, a light oil or lotion is used to allow your muscles to be massaged without causing excessive friction to the skin. Do not hesitate to ask questions or mention if you feel any discomfort so that the massage therapist can use another approach or technique.

What is a Shiatsu Massage?

Shiatsu therapy is a traditional healing art based on TCM. It combines massage, stretching, and gentle physical pressure along meridian channels and pressure points. Acupuncture also uses these meridians and pressure points to balance the body’s energy (known as “Ki” or “Chi”). Each meridian relates to an organ function. When the meridians are balanced, the tissues, muscles, nerves, metabolism and emotions are balanced.

The practitioner uses fingers, palms, elbows, knees and feet to unblock and stimulate the flow of energy along the meridian lines. This is a holistic therapy designed to uplift and harmonize your physical, emotional, mental and spiritual well-being. Can provide relief from specific problems such as: lower back pain, migraines, insomnia, depression, sinusitis, asthma etc. The therapist can also offer additional support with corrective yoga exercises, nutritional guidance and holistic counselling. This treatment also improves function of the circulatory and digestive system.

Shiatsu therapy was developed approximately 2548 years ago and became popular in the 1970' s throughout the United States. It was first used to treat simple muscular tension, but many practitioners today treat a wide variety of health issues with Shiatsu massage.  We welcome you to join us at one of our Mississauga Massage Therapy clinics.

Is massage therapy always appropriate?

No, there are several medical conditions that would make massage inappropriate. That's why it is necessary that you fill out the health history forms and before you begin your session. The massage therapist will ask general health questions to rule out if you have any contraindications to massage. It is very important that you inform the practitioner of any health problems or medications you are taking. If you are under a doctor's care, it is strongly advised that you receive a written recommendation for massage prior to any session. Your massage therapist may require a recommendation or approval from your doctor.

How do I know if a therapist is registered?

All Registered Massage Therapists (RMTs) have photo ID cards, issued by the College of Massage Therapists of Ontario, showing the Therapist's registration number. All clients of massage therapy services have the right to view this ID card in order to be assured that you are visiting a Registered Massage Therapist.

What is Cranial Sacral Therapy?

Cranial Sacral Therapy uses slow pressure and stretching techniques to release connective tissue. An involuntary movement is induced that assists with assessing and releasing restrictive patterns. It’s a gentle non-invasive energetic touch therapy developed to help trigger the body’s innate self-healing ability to release old suppressed trauma and establish ultimate balance in the body. Not only is CST used to relieve old trauma and neck pain, it is used in treatment for a variety of different issues. This therapy is used to treat migraines and headaches, and works to relieve constipation. Cranial Therapy also aids in treating irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), sinus infections, insomnia and fibromyalia.

How many CST sessions would I need?

The amount of session you will need depends on what type of problem you are trying to treat. Typically treatments would be 2-3 times per week depending of the severity of the injury or problem.

Is cranial sacral therapy effective?

There is plenty of factual evidence that proves that CST relieves stress and tension. Studies have shown that this treatment is more effective of infants, toddlers and children.

Is CST the best out of all the treatments?

The CST technique is closely related to Polarity Therapy, Craniosacral Therapy, Accupressure and Myofascial Release. Each of these treatments have their own benefits and techniques. Determining the best of these treatments would depend on the individual and their injury or problem.

What do I do during a massage therapy treatment?

Make yourself comfortable. If your therapist wants you to adjust your position, she or he will either move you or will ask you to move what is needed. Otherwise, change your position anytime to make yourself more comfortable. Many people close their eyes and relax completely during a session; others prefer to talk. It's up to you. It is your massage, and whatever feels natural to you is the best way to relax. Do not hesitate to ask questions at any time.
