Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Manual Lymphatic Drainage - Mississauga

About Lymphatic Drainage

Your lymphatic system helps eliminate your body’s waste. A healthy, active lymphatic system uses the natural movements of smooth muscle tissue to do this. However, surgery or other damage can cause fluids to build up in your lymph system and your lymph nodes, a condition known as lymphedema. In order to remove the excess build up of lymph in the lymphatic system, massage therapy can be utilized in order to move the excess lymph to allow proper circulation.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage

Lymphatic Massage is a gentle whole body treatment which relaxes the nervous system and aids the body’s immune system. It involves a range of specialised and gentle rhythmic pumping techniques to move skin in the direction of the lymph flow through a network of lymph vessels and lymph nodes.

This supports the body to naturally eliminate excess toxins, dead cells, viruses, bacteria and chemicals. Other benefits of this massage are: relieving fluid congestion, promoting wound healing, relieve stress and anxiety. Dr Emil Vodder has created a unique range of movement regarding the lymph system and this method is gaining acceptance in the treatment and control of lymphedema.

Treatment includes: Manual lymphatic drainage, Compression bandaging and/or compression sleeves, Education about skin care, and Exercise to promote lymphatic function and flow.

The therapist will make an individualized treatment plan based on the patient’s presentation.

What is the lymphatic system?

The lymphatic system plays a large role in the immune function and circulation. It moves fluid out of the tissues, and collects waste products, bacteria, dead cells and large protein molecules. From there, the waste products are carried to the lymph nodes to be broken down, filtered, and eliminated while the protein rich fluid is transported back to the heart to rejoin circulation.

Its main functions are to: Keep balance of fluid in tissues, Move proteins and digested fats, and Help fight infection by removing viruses and bacteria

When the lymph vessels become compromised they are unable to transport lymph fluid back into circulation, therefore it starts to accumulate and can results in chronic swelling. If it is left untreated it can also result in skin changes, such as hardening of the skin. This accumulation of protein rich lymph fluid is known as lymphedema.

Once this condition occurs, the swelling may increase or become chronic if an effective treatment program is not initiated – Manual Lymphatic Drainage/Combined Decongestive Therapy is most effective; which involves manual techniques applied to the skin with proper bandaging and compression garments.
