Does WSIB pay for Chiropractic Treatment? PDF Print E-mail
Workplace Injuries

The Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) pays for chiropractic treatment, but there are strict guidelines for the type and length of such treatment. WSIB pays for the first health care provider who treats your work-related injury. If the first health care provider is a chiropractor, then WSIB will pay for the treatments.

You may select any health care provider you wish for your next treatment. WSIB calls this your "initial choice" of health care provider. If this health care provider is a chiropractor, then WSIB will pay for the chiropractic treatments. Once you have made your decision, you cannot change to another health care provider without the approval of WSIB.

If your health care provider is a medical doctor who refers you to a chiropractor for treatment, WSIB will pay the cost if they agree the treatment will help your injury. A medical referral from one doctor to another, where WSIB agrees with the method of treatment, is not considered a change of health care providers.

OR

If your "initial choice" of health care providers is a medical doctor, he or she must notify WSIB in writing that chiropractic treatments will help your injury. When WSIB has approved your chiropractic treatments, they will advise you in writing. You must visit a chiropractor that treats clients with workplace insurance claims, as some chiropractors do not.

Your chiropractor must send regular reports to WSIB, usually every two weeks.

How do I file a claim for benefits? PDF Print E-mail
Workplace Injuries
To file a claim for benefits you must:

1. Report your injury or illness to the WSIB.

You should complete, sign and return Form 6 (337k, pdf) as soon as possible following a work related injury/ awareness of illness. It’s best to complete this form soon after the accident or awareness of illness – while all the details are still fresh in your memory.

There is a deadline. A claim must be filed within six months of an accident or, in the case of an occupational disease, within six months of a worker learning of the disease. The claim may be filed after six months, if the worker can show “exceptional circumstances” existed at the time of the deadline. For further information, call 1-800-387-5540.

2. Consent to release of your functional abilities information to your employer
Your functional abilities information is non-medical information from the health care professional treating you. It tells you and your employer what kinds of work activities your illness or injury permits. Without this consent, you cannot claim benefits.

Return to Work PDF Print E-mail
Workplace Injuries
Preventing workplace injuries and illnesses is the responsibility of everyone in the workplace. When injuries and illness do occur, however, it is important for you and your employer to try to minimize the impacts by focusing on returning you to safe and productive work as soon as it is medically possible for you to do so.

Why early and safe return to work?
Most people who have a workplace injury or illness are able to return to some type of work even while they are still recovering, provided the work is medically suited to the injury or illness.

Returning to daily work and life activities can actually help an injured worker’s recovery and reduce the chance of long- term disability. In fact, worldwide research shows that the longer you are off work due to injury or illness, the less likely it is that you will return to work.

Both you and your employer benefit in cooperating in your early and safe return to work. You benefit by restoring your source of income and staying active and productive, which are important to the healing/recovery process. Your employer benefits by minimizing the financial and human costs of your injury or illness.

When do I File a Claim for Benefits with the WSIB? PDF Print E-mail
Workplace Injuries
A worker who is injured at work or becomes sick because of his/her job should:
  • Get first aid immediately, or health care if needed.
  • Tell your employer about the accident or illness as soon as possible.
When can I make a claim for WSIB benefits?

As a worker, you can claim benefits for a work-related accident or illness if you have:
  • received health care, and/or
  • lost time or wages from work beyond the day of accident/illness, or
  • continued to work but on partial hours only.

If you had to do different work due to the accident/ illness for more than seven days and did not see a health professional, you can also make a claim.

What is a Worker’s Report of Injury/Disease (Form 6)?

You must fill out a Form 6 (337k, pdf). The Form 6 Reference Guide for Workers (1.3mb, pdf) will give you more information on filling out this form.

Often called just the Form 6, this is a WSIB form that the worker completes and sends to the WSIB after a work-related injury or illness. It is a way for you to tell us the details of what happened to cause the injury or illness. It also provides us with information we need to make decisions about and process your claim. This form is different from the one you may have filled out at work for your employer. When you complete and submit the Form 6, it tells us that you are claiming for benefits for a work-related accident.

There is a time limit for you to report. It is important to claim benefits as soon as possible. You have six months from the date of the accident to claim benefits or, for occupational diseases, from the time you learn of the disease.

Seek Proper Medical Attention PDF Print E-mail
Workplace Injuries
If you are injured or ill because of work, your first priority is to seek proper medical attention. You must also inform your employer or supervisor, so that they can give you assistance and fulfill their responsibilities regarding the incident.

In case of injury or illness you should:

1. Get proper medical treatment
  • Go to the nearest first aid station immediately and notify a staff member trained in first aid. An accurate record should be kept of the treatment you receive.
  • If your injury or illness is serious (or you are not sure how serious it is) go to a doctor or hospital. Your employer is responsible for providing transport to medical treatment and may have to call an ambulance or assign someone to accompany you.

2. Report the incident to your employer
Your employer or supervisor needs to know about your injury or illness to provide help, fulfill their employer responsibilities under the Workplace Safety and Insurance Act, and take measures to prevent further incidents. Report the incident to your supervisor immediately
Note that your employer must train you in emergency procedures.
If you have dealt with any emergency with proper medical attention, and now you require rehab or physio we can help you recover from your workplace injury or accident.
